Writing this book gave me a chance to speak to several of the original Rangers and some British Commandos who shared with me a wealth of information. I remain in awe of these men, their accomplishments, and their humble ways. Meeting and speaking with them has been and remains a privilege.
Rangers at Dieppe came about largely because of a conversation I had with my agent, Jake Elwell, some years ago. It took me nearly a year to write the proposal, and then probably another year or so for us to find a house that was not only willing to publish it but would provide the sort of support it needed. We found a champion in Natalee Rosenberg at Berkley Caliber; my experience there has been great. While everyone on the staff has been fantastic, I especially want to thank Natalee’s assistant, Michelle Vega, who not only helped me pick up a lot of pieces but was tireless in chasing me down, not an easy task.
A great deal of the research that made the book possible was done by my wife, Debra Scacciaferro, who slogged through piles of historical records and trekked to libraries and archives when I was busy with other tasks.
I’d also like to thank the people of Scotland, England, Dieppe and the environs for tolerating me as I wandered through their back and in some cases front yards muttering to myself while researching the book.
